Galatians 1-3: No Other Gospel

Galatians 1:6-9:

6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.

This is a wonderfully clarifying text for everyone seeking the truth. Paul makes perfectly plain what He believes about the Gospel. It is unique. There is no other. No other news in heaven or on earth can be called THE good news.

This text fights against extra revelations. No other news can supersede the Gospel, not the words of men or angels. If anything that anyone says goes against the Gospel of Christ, it is not true gospel news; it is false. And there are dire consequences for those who speak out against the gospel.

But, this text does not say exactly what the Gospel is. It simply says that there is only one Gospel and that it is a serious offense to speak against it.

So what is the Gospel?

There are so many ways to say it and so many pieces in order to present it completely, but the clearest way that Paul explains it in Galatians is found a few verses down in chapter 3. Galatians 3:13-14 says:

13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.

The curse that is meant to befall those who live lives contrary to the Gospel has fallen on Jesus. Why? So that all who come by faith can receive the Holy Spirit and enter into the blessings of Abraham. And what are those blessings? Nothing less than becoming a part of the people of God forever.

The Gospel is the good news that Christ became a curse for us so that we might become God’s children! There is no other news worthy of being called truly and completely good. And there is no other news that is freely offered to all who come by faith to Jesus. It is the Gospel alone that can save, and it can truly save.
