Everyone wants to know when the end will happen. That’s why someone like Harold Camping gains a following. People love predictions about the end of days. We don’t want to be caught off guard by something that important.
Which is exactly what will happen to everyone who doesn’t listen to Jesus words in Matthew 24. He doesn’t tell his disciples when the end will come, but He does tell them how to look for the end.
He says they’ll know it’s close when things get worse. He says nations will rise against each other and Christians will be persecuted, and he says:
And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you dare not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet.
“Don’t be alarmed; there’s more”
That’s not exactly the type of thing that calms people down. But Jesus is not trying to calm anyone down. Later, He says this:
Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
He wants them to be ready. He’s coming back. No one knows when. And if we’re not ready, we’ll miss it. And that is not something you want to miss. For those who choose not to follow Christ, that day will be a day of utter terror. But for those who make Jesus their treasure, it will be Christmas, all the time, forever. Well, not Christmas obviously, but it will be the surprise of receiving the greatest treasure of all: the presence of the glory of God in the person of Jesus Christ!
I’m ready for that day. Can’t wait.
