Mark 2: We Need a Doctor

Mark chapter 2 chronicles the calling of Levi by Jesus. If you remember the story, you know that Jesus goes to Levi’s house for a meal and quickly gets chastised by the Pharisees for eating with “tax collectors and sinners”. Jesus’ reply is simple and profound:

And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Jesus came to call sinners, for they were the ones who needed to be saved. But the Pharisees couldn’t see the truth. They were not righteous. They were just as sick with sin and in need of saving.

And so are we.

We are sick in need of a Doctor. We are sinners in need of a Savior. Without Christ we are terminally ill, awaiting our death, but He breaks through the darkness of our coming death and shines His great light, bringing life into our dead and dying souls.

We need Him, and He came for us!
