Nehemiah 6-7: The Help of Our God

When God’s people join together, united in one common purpose, who they trust in quickly becomes evident. Nehemiah 6:15-16:

So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days. And when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem, for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God

There is really no denying the mark of God’s power on His people. If you glance at a church, you may think that all the people pretty much look the same. It may appear to be nothing more than a social club, where like-minded people come to hang out with each other. But if you really look at a church, you wil find that the opposite is true. A church – a true church – is made up of the old, the young, men, women, black, white, asian, hispanic, blue collar, white collar, single people, married people, families, disabled people, rich people, poor people, formally educated, the self taught, experienced Christians, new believers, secret sinners, and people who cannot and will not hide their struggles, and so, so many more people.

For a group this diverse to do ANYTHING together is a gift of God’s common grace, but, for a group like this to join together to work for the sake of God’s glory and building of His kingdom, literally rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem in Nehemiah’s case, is evidence of God’s great power working among His people.

The church is God’s instrument of proclaiming His glory to the nations and the universe. God’s people united for God’s glory is God’s masterpiece creation and His prized possession.

For we (the church) are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

To me (Paul), though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things, so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
