The first 40(ish) verses of Numbers 33 chronicle the journey of the Israelites from Egypt to the banks of the Jordan. They spent 40 years traveling a distance that, when taken directly, was just about 220 miles. That’s only two thirds of the distance between San Francisco and Los Angeles!
Now, we know that their wilderness wanderings were a result of their continual complaining and disobedience. but What continually amazes me is that they STILL inherited the Promised Land. After years and years of breaking covenant with God, He remained faithful and brought them into the land that He promised.
What a wonderful reality to remember, that God is so rich in mercy that He remains true when we continually show ourselves to be false. He remains faithful while we are unfaithful. He showed his love for us in that, while we were still sinners, stuck in our rebellion against Him and dead in our trespasses, Christ died for us.
If we have died with him, we will also live with him;
if we endure, we will also reign with him;
if we deny him, he also will deny us;
if we are faithless, he remains faithful—
for he cannot deny himself.
